Getting ready, in pictures
The gear, the van, maps spread across a table. One or two posts a week.
Ten minutes of writing every evening, always at the same time. Including the days when nothing happened — those are often the ones that say the most.
For now there is nothing to tell that happens on a dirt track. There are quotes, refusals, a van that cannot be found, and nine questions rewritten for the sixth time. That is the preparation, and it has its place elsewhere: in the writing for what gets thought through, on Instagram for what can be seen.
From 5 January, this page fills up. One entry a day or close to it, dated, placed, unedited. The signal will be bad and sometimes gone for ten days at a stretch: when there is a silence, it will be announced rather than suffered.
The gear, the van, maps spread across a table. One or two posts a week.
Why I am going alone, the nine questions, the budget, the refusals. What takes more than three paragraphs.
The questions asked everywhere, how I approach people, and what I refuse to film.
